Layered schedules
Layer rotations to provide primary, backup, or overlapping coverage, and link each schedule to the team responsible.
Rotations and handoffs
Choose who takes each turn, how many days or weeks it lasts, and a local handoff time that follows daylight-saving changes.
Around-the-clock or weekly coverage
Provide continuous cover or limit a rotation to selected hours of the week, such as business hours or weekends.
Overrides and swaps
Arrange cover for time off, exchange shifts, fill a coverage gap, or mark a period as unassigned without rebuilding the rotation.
Coverage views
See who is on call now and next in timelines and calendars, alongside incidents and planned maintenance.
Shift notifications and reminders
Notify people when their coverage changes and remind the person taking over when a shift starts.

Routing and escalation

Decide who should respond to each incident and who to bring in if more help is needed.

Escalation policy

Storefront Web · Medium urgency

Alert the engineers covering the service.

Service ownership and routing
Assign an owning team to each service and choose which schedules, teams, or named people receive incidents at each urgency level.
Shared defaults and service policies
Set common acknowledgement and escalation rules for your organization, then adjust them for services that need a different response.
Timed escalation
Bring in additional responders after delays you choose. If nobody is available at a step, move on immediately or wait as planned.
Fallback recipients
Call on the current, next, or previous shift, a randomly chosen off-call participant, or all other participants when you need backup.
Acknowledgement policies
Choose who may acknowledge, require a first response or one per engaged schedule, and decide whether acknowledgement stops escalation or all automatic alerts.
Responders and FYI recipients
Ask responders to take action while keeping FYI recipients informed without requiring them to acknowledge or join the response.

Incident response

See who is responding, share what you know, and keep a record from the first alert to resolution.

Manual incident creation
Start an incident from the web app, mobile app, or Slack as soon as someone spots a problem, without waiting for monitoring.
Acknowledgement and resolution
Acknowledge an incident when you begin responding and mark it resolved when work is finished. Track each responder’s acknowledgement and alert status alongside the incident’s progress.
Custom urgency, status, and roles
Define urgency levels, status labels, and incident roles that fit your response process.
Responder management
Add or remove services, teams, schedules, and people as the incident develops. Responders can choose their role in the response.
Notes and monitoring context
Share findings and progress with the team alongside updates from your monitoring tools.
Incident timelines
Review who was alerted, who responded, what the team recorded, and how the incident and its monitoring signals changed over time.
Alert now and restart
Reach a responder before their scheduled alert or restart their alert sequence from the web app when you need to contact them again.
Incident following
Follow all incidents or selected services to hear about new incidents, added notes, increased urgency, and newly involved services.
Live views and incident history
Keep up with live incidents or find past work by service, urgency, status, and tags. Share a numbered link to the incident.

Signals and maintenance

Turn monitoring reports into incidents, keep related updates together, and account for planned maintenance.

Repeated monitoring updates stay together.

Datadog monitors
Receive Datadog monitor alerts, updates, and recoveries in Relay. Map monitor priorities to your urgency levels and view metric graphs with the incident.
Inbound webhooks
Connect other tools to send monitoring signals or schedule maintenance in Relay through authenticated webhooks.
Signal deduplication
Keep repeated reports tied to the same signal and filter out duplicate deliveries.
Service matching and grouping
Use service IDs, names, or tags to connect signals to the affected service. Group them into an existing incident or open a separate incident.
Automatic or manual resolution
Close an incident automatically when all its linked signals recover, or let your team decide when the work is finished.
Monitoring history and team decisions
Review monitoring updates without overwriting your team’s incident notes or its decisions about the title and urgency.
Maintenance windows and held signals
Delay new monitoring incidents during planned service or organization maintenance. Review held signals; unresolved problems can open or join an incident when maintenance ends.

Alerts and readiness

Choose how Relay reaches you, check that alerts can get through, and protect time away from notifications.

Alert delivery steps

Personal policy · Medium urgency

DS

3 delivery steps
  1. Keep responder alerts in Relay’s Inbox.Critical push can sound through silent mode and Do Not Disturb.Incident details delivered to your email inbox.
  2. Short text alerts sent to your phone.
  3. Voice calls for incidents that still need your response.
Alert channels
Receive incident alerts in Relay, by mobile push or critical push, email, SMS, voice call, or Slack direct message.
Personal alert sequences
Choose how to be contacted first and which channels to try later if you have not responded, with a separate sequence for each urgency level.
Critical mobile alerts
Break through Do Not Disturb with critical alerts that sound and repeat to help you notice urgent incidents.
Quiet hours
Pause personal notifications for time off or focus, with or without an end time. Choose channels that can still reach you, and see a warning when quiet hours overlap on-call duty.
Channel self-tests
Check that alerts reach you with a test notification, without creating an incident.
Readiness checks and reminders
Check your device’s alert setup, review past checks, and get reminders when setup needs attention or another check is due.
Notification preferences and inbox
Choose where routine operational updates arrive and read them in your Relay inbox. Enable optional sounds and browser notifications while Relay is open.

Available channels depend on your role, verified contacts, phone region, and device settings.

Slack and automations

Start and follow incident response in Slack, with conversations and on-call groups that stay connected to Relay.

Guided incident creation
Start an incident through a Slack form, with defaults for the title, urgency, notes, and responders.
Alert acknowledgement in Slack
Connect your Slack account to receive incident alerts by direct message and acknowledge them without leaving Slack.
Incident conversations
Automatically open a thread or dedicated public channel, invite responders with connected Slack accounts to new channels, and share incident progress, notes, urgency, and responder changes.
On-call announcements
Post who is on call when coverage changes, including temporary cover. Choose all schedules or just the ones relevant to a channel.
Managed user groups
Keep dedicated Slack user groups up to date with the people currently on call or the members of a Relay team.

Mobile response

Respond to incidents, check your shifts, and manage personal alerts in the iOS and Android apps.
